Bio:
David Kleiler, Founder and Director of Local Sightings
David has over 30 years of experience in the independent film industry as an exhibitor, professor, collaborator/producer, programmer and consultant.
David was responsible for saving the art house cinema, the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline; during his tenure as its Director from 1988-1996 he showcased the best of independent cinema at a time when most of Boston’s movie houses were only booking blockbusters. The Coolidge has become a well-known and well-respected theater for independent and art house films in the Boston-area.
As the Founder and Director of the Boston Underground Film Festival, begun in 1998 and now in its 10th year, David has been shaking up the sensibilities of independent film fans. David has also been the Artistic Director of the Woods Hole Film Festival, former Director & Chairman of the Board & currently Chief Program Advisor to the Northampton Film Festival, creatively involved with the Newburyport Documentary Film Festival and the Film portion of Toronto's North By Northeast Festival; his programming at these festivals constantly challenges film goers and exposes audiences to works of merit that have limited or no distribution. He has programmed independent film features and shorts collections at more than 35 locations on the East Coast.
David has a myriad of film credits to his name for his contributions on independent film projects (please refer to Localsighting.com Clients page). Projects with which he has been involved have won awards at Slamdance and have appeared at Sundance, Toronto and a score of regional film festivals.
A regular attendee of major festivals such as Sundance and the Toronto Film Festival, David has developed relationships with industry professionals, nationally and internationally from all areas of independent film.
A former tenured professor of Communications at Babson College, he has also taught at Emerson College, U Mass Boston, Tufts University and the Boston Architectural College.
A filmmakers’ consultant, teacher, and mentor, David enjoys assisting filmmakers and screenwriters bring their work to fruition and achieve their personal goals.
