Born and raised in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, Jonathan got his start at 18 as an intern for “Entertainment Tonight.” He was soon promoted from the research department to assisting film historian Leonard Maltin. For two years, Stein was responsible for picking all the classic film clips and sound bites for Maltin’s daily video segments, contributed film reviews, and helped edit the best-selling “Leonard Maltin’s TV Movies and Video Guide.”
Jonathan left Los Angeles to continue his education in the film department at San Francisco State University. For his thesis, he produced the award-winning 16mm documentary short “Critizen.” The film went on to become an official selection at Sundance, South by Southwest, the Denver International Film Festival, the Leipzig International Documentary Festival, and the New York Underground Film Festival – among others. “Critizen” also won numerous awards including the David L. Wolper International Documentary Association Student Achievement Award, and received honorable mention at the Chicago Underground festival and Atlanta Film festival.
After graduation, Jonathan returned to Los Angeles, where he worked as a Line Producer for an episode of the French television series “Femmes.” For the next five years, he worked as a Creative Executive and Development Associate for top producers including Phyllis Carlyle (“Se7en,” “The Accidental Tourist”), Marc Boyman (“Dead Ringers,” “The Fly”), and The Wolper Organization (“Roots,” “L.A. Confidential” and “The Mists of Avalon”). Stein also worked as a story analyst for Showtime, Hallmark, Distant Horizon and VH1. He transitioned into reality television as a Story Development Executive and Researcher for Fox/ABC Family’s “Exploring the Unknown,” NBC’s “Confirmation,” and the Playboy TV investigative news series “Sexcetera.”
In 2003, Stein commenced co-writing, developing, and producing the feature “Slaughterhouse of the Rising Sun,” a satirical horror film masquerading as an authentic Grindhouse horror film from 1972. The film appeared in numerous festivals, distributed in over a dozen countries and was released domestically on DVD in 2005 by Think Films.
Jonathan went on to be the Unit Production Manager for the feature film “Confessions of a Pit Fighter,” starring Armand Assante, Flavor Flav, James Russo, and John Savage. Jonathan resided as the in-house Production Manager and Post Production Supervisor for The Halsey Company, where he oversaw the production of projects including Tim McGraw’s hit music videos “When the Stars Go Blue” and “Last Dollar (Fly Away).” His additional projects at Halsey includes the commercial “Bolton Swings Sinatra”, the 12 camera concert shoot for “Feed the Children”, various documentaries, behind the scenes and infomercials.
His recent positions include being the Consulting Producer for the recreation portion of the PBS documentary, “The People vs. Leo Frank” which was funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Jonathan just recently finished working as a Interactive Producer for Accela Communications where he managed B2B online rich media programs for various Fortune 500 companies.
Jonathan currently resides in the Boston area and has a feature film in development with veteran producer Paul Heller (“My Left Foot” / “Enter the Dragon”.)
