Media Makers and Performers Online Guide
Material Ghost: Films and Their Medium, The (Book)

"Few books of film criticism in the past twenty-five years have been so enjoyable or instructive... [Perez] has excellent things to say about authorship, about documentaries, about popular genres, about cinematic point of view and narrative technique, about actors, and above all about camera style... He never condescends to his audience or sacrifices his intellectual clarity, and most importantly he makes us want to look once more at the remarkable pictures he discusses. The virtues of his writing are quite rare." -- Review by James Naremore (Cineaste Magazine)

As a student of Gil's I found it a little self-congratulatory of himself to assign his own book as required reading. I don't think I would have picked it up on my own, and I don't know if I would have gotten much out of it without having him discussing the topics addressed in person twice a week (note: I don't like non-fiction to begin with so I'm biased anyway). That being said, Gil was a great professor (although a bit of a slow talker) and I'm glad to see his writing getting a positive review here. In fact, I may go back and try reading some snippets again to see if I might appreciate it more now that a few years have passed and I'm no longer a scatter-brained college kid.
