BUFF: Sweet Vibrating Wizard of Gore

Hey all;

Editor Steve here.

Many, many things are happening this week, what with the Boston Underground Film Festival kicking into gear.

Actually, things got going a few days ago at Good Vibrations in Brookline, where BUFF had their pre-fest party. It was a great time for all.

Let me say now, I'm a lucky bastard. Why? Err... I won BUFF's raffle: Two Festival passes worth $150.

I was pretty fuckin' surprised when I heard festival director Ms. Anna say my name. I walked up to where she was handing out the prizes and gave her a hug. She deserves one. Seriously, she goes through a lotta shit to make the Underground Fest happen. And what can I say, I'm a huggy guy.

And I’m a wallflower, always have been and don’t expect to change, unless I’m brainwashed and thus undergo a 180 personality shift. Wallflowering photographic proof below.

That’s me in the back there, and that’s NFN'ers actress Irina Peligrad and director Rod Weber - the man who's next movie stars Ms Irina and Greta Gerwig from Hannah Takes the Stairs.

Of the many important things I've learned while working as a writer (yes, I do learn important things from time to time) is it pays to network. I’ve never been a fan of networking. In fact, I spent many years actively not networking because it seemed to me kinda like... I don't know... lying. But I was wrong. It’s not. It’s just getting your ass out there, being yourself, and meeting other people who need help with their business and who can help you with yours. It’s kind of a win/win thing. It’s just a little harder for me to do, being the slight introvert. Blah, blah, blah...

Anyway, at the BUFF party I was a slight extrovert for a few hours.

The BUFF crew showed short films and talked short films (Demonolgy of Desire is a Must See), and, with assistance from the Good Vibrationists, offered beer, wine, crackers and some chocolatey candies shaped like sea shells. I downed four of these confections, which resulted in a sugar rush that caused me to talk and talk and talk until I said, out loud, “Steve, shut the fuck up and get a beer.” Strange how OD’ing on candy makes me refer to myself in the third person.

The main event of the evening was the reveal of the newly sculpted Bacchus award. A rather evil looking rabbit. You get this fellow should your film happen to please BUFF's judges.

For a gallery of photos from the party, click here. Zillion thanks to our photog, Jaymes Leavitt.

The festival begins tomorrow (Thursday) at 7:00 with a screening of The Wizard of Gore at The Brattle. Director Jeremy Kasten will be there. And I heard a rumor that star Crispin Glover will be on hand, which could be strange.

Then there's the post-screening party over at Noir Bar in Harvard Square, where Wizard of Gore co-stars The Suicide Girls will cause their own kind of trouble.

I'll be at the screening, then Noir, doing my best to not be a wallflower. Don't be afraid to say hi. I don't bite (hard).

Pictures from the Boston Underground Film Festival Fundraiser on Friday

I would guess that I am in good company when I say that I am still recovering from the sleep deprivation that Friday night left me with.  On Friday, the Boston Underground Film Festival team threw a party at Dave Lewis' house to raise funds to keep the fest going.

You can imagine the crowd attending an event with interest in:  underground film, sultry lounge music, belly dancing and an abundance of liquid party favors.  If you weren't having a  good time there, you should just end it all now.

That said, enjoy the photos and we will let you know about the next event worth checking out.
