Compensation: No Pay?

The Craigslist ads in Boston for film and crew gigs are being filled with job and gig offers that have this in common; the compensation is no pay. Usually I scroll down to see the compensation first and if there is no compensation, I don't even bother reading the rest.

When I started looking in the LA ads for work, someone posted a reply to one of the free gigs and made a nice point; not even illegal Mexicans waiting on the side of the road would work for free. From now on I will use that in response to free work offers.

Think about it. Film is a business. You need employees to work your business. If no money is being offered, you shouldn't expect full time commitment. And above all, if illegal Mexicans who don't have homes, health care, or in some cases their own transportation aren't willing to work for free, why should those who are U.S. citizens and have it better do the same? It's as if illegal Mexicans have a higher standard than we do when it comes to finding work.

Don't sell yourself short.

Hey Jonathan,
This might be a good subject to also bring up for conversation in the Actors Group. There might be something you can do.
