I am low on money and my only source of income is from a temp agency right now.
Earlier today I went to the bank and found out that I overdrew my account, but luckily my paychecks from the last three weeks replenished my funds and brought me out of debt. This is my first time, hopefully my last.
I am now looking at my money and deciding whether or not to even drive out to meet total strangers who have yet to reveal whether they are offering paid work or not. Gas is now $3 where I live and not all my bills are paid yet as I write this. I'm hoping that someone who said would call me actually will this weekend as that right now is the only hope for paid work on set, even more than what I'm making each week, which is never steady and has its ups and downs.
Let's face it, Boston has become a huge source for free unpaid work that drains your wallet and the gas in your car. Any human being who has a stomach knows that we need food during the day, so that is another expense we need to consider. I'm not yet living in my car, luckily my health insurance is free based on my income, but I still have rent, food, and gas to consider.
So what would your local production company do about this? Would they help you out with your finances and give you paid work so that you can live another week debt free and put off starving for another month? Or should I just go on welfare right now if I want to continue in film?
The fact of the matter is, we are all looking out for ourselves. We are the ones to refuse free work and choose a job that will actually keep us alive for the time being. I cannot work in the film industry right in Boston because I can't afford to. Bottom line. Why? Because there is no paid work, and whoever's offering it is looking for someone who's 20 and has 30 years of experience.
I've been on 9 paid productions, 1 deferred (That production owes me $4,400 and never gave me a copy of the contract I signed), and one internship. Not much of a resume, simply because I refuse to work for free and therefore, I cannot add free work to my resume. That simple.
I have to stick to what I have that's keeping me afloat. I might have to temporarily shut down my account on here so that I don't keep getting add requests that come once in a while. They say it's all who you know, and the only people I know right now I can depend on are the people at the temp agency.
